We started with one objective: the publication of a definitive edition of Mark Twain’s Diaries of Adam and Eve. In 1997, his “Extracts from Adam’s Diary” and “Eve’s Diary” were only to be found in anthologies, while his revision of Adam’s had gone unpublished. As the most personal of all Twain’s writings, they needed to be in print—and together, as he intended.
Following the success of our print and audio editions of the Diaries, “The Tiny Publisher That Could” headlined a San Francisco Chronicle article about Fair Oaks Press. Tiny, that’s us. It means occasionally bringing out a new book—not to meet a quota or capitalize on the latest trend, but because that book needs to be published. And published with care.
Decades and a few books later, we still believe there’s a place for tiny publishers, as well as one-ring circuses and little shops around the corner.
